Mix together 2 cups brown sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 4 Tbsp. butter or margarine, and 1/4 tsp. soda. Boil this in a heavy sauce pan till a soft ball is formed in cold water.

Remove from heat and add 1 tsp. vanilla and 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional). Boil till creamy and pour into buttered pan. Cut into squares while still warm.
