Dinner Rolls

1/2 cup warm water

1 tsp. sugar

1 pkg. dry yeast

2 cups milk

1/4 cup soft butter or margarine

2 Tbsp. sugar

1 1/2 tsp. salt

1 egg

5 1/2 – 6 cups flour

 

Measure water into large mixing bowl. Add 1 tsp. sugar and stir until dissolved. Sprinkle yeast over and let stand 10 minutes. Stir.

heat milk to scald and add butter, 2 Tbsp. sugar and salt; cool to lukewarm. Add to yeast mixture and beaten egg, plus half of the flour. Beat well with spoon. Add enough remaining flour to make soft dough that you can handle. Keep dough as soft as possible. Turn out onto lightly floured surface and knead about five minutes until smooth. Put in greased bowl, cover and let rise in warm place about 1 1/2 hours. Punch down and let rise again. Shape into any desired shape. Put in greased pan, let rise until double in size. Bake 12 -15 minutes at 400* or until brown. Brush top(s) with butter.
