1 large beef bone (fresh as possible)
or
1 doz. pieces of stew beef
*Wash these and place in large pot adding 1/2 cup barley and 2 qt. cold water and boil slowly until the meat is very tender; about 1 -1 1/2 hours.
Strain off liquid and make up to 2 qts. with fresh water.
Add 1 tsp. salt
1 cup diced carrots
1/2 cup onion
1/2 cup celery
1/2 cup turnip
1/2 bay leaf
Sprinkle of pepper
Boil until tender. Remove bay leaf and add the pieces of tender meat and the barley and resat well. Serve with soda biscuits or fresh buns.
